- Lexington on-Line becomes the first full-featured online service in Central Kentucky with a concentration on matters of interest to the people of the region
- The Republicans essentially stormed Washington after drafting a "Contract With America", promising to shrink government and reduce the regulatory and tax burdens on businesses and working Americans
- The Public Service Commission opened up competition for long distance to all carriers
- A Republican took Kentucky's 1st Congressional District seat for the first time in over a century
- 4 out of 6 of KY's Congressional House seats went Republican
- The Herald-Leader reported from a survey conducted by the Kentucky Candidate Information Survey stating that KY candidates fueled their campaigns on changes in KERA, lower taxes and a reduction in the size and scope of government
- All 11 of the newly elected state legislators opposed casino gambling
- All opposed employer health-care mandates
- All supported changes in KERA
- 9 of the 11 opposed gun control measures
