Dr. Steve's List Of The Books That The National Anxiety Foundation Endorses.
For Laypersons
Personal Review by Stephen Cox MD
General Topic of Anxiety
The Anxiety Cure. R. Dupont et al. John Wiley and Sons,1998.
--- "244 pages of common sense advice about helping anxiety in general."
Anxiety And Its Treatment. J. Greist M.D. and James Jefferson M.D. , and Isaac Marks, M.D. Warner Books,
in paperback, 1986.
--- "This is a nice concise book which tries to address all the anxiety
disorders. It focuses some on medication, a lot on behavior therapy and a great deal on
self help. It is a quality work written by big names in the anxiety field: Dr. Greist, an internationally recognized expert on obsessive compulsive
disorder; Dr. Marks, a famous expert in behavior therapy.
Anxiety. Donald Goodwin Ballantine Books, New York, 1987.
--- "This is my favorite book on the general topic of anxiety disorders but I
understand it may be out of print at the moment so you may have to find it at
your library. Dr. Goodwin has a marvelous way of weaving the history and
science of anxiety together with a needle of wit. The professional will find this book enjoyable and enlightening."
The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Washing. Judith Rapoport, Penguin Books, New York, 1991.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder In Children. Obsessive-Compulsive Information Center, Madison Institute of Medicine, 7617

Stop Obsessing! Edina Foa PhD and Reid Wilson PhD, Bantam Books, New York, 1991.
Brain Lock Schwartz, Regan Books/Harper Collins, 1996.
"all four books above are great. I recommend that if you have OCD, you read all
four eventually, and in the above order."
Professional Reading List
Essential Psychopharmacology, S. Stahl, Cambridge University Press, New York, 1996.
--- "This is a must for every physician who prescribes medication for any
neuropsychiatric disorder. It is the best instructive textbook on this topic
that has ever been written. I give Dr. Stahl an A+ for this remarkable book."
Psychopharmacology The Fourth Generation of Progress. F. Bloom & D. Kupfer, Raven Press, New York, 1995.
--- "This book is for the physician who already has a sound understanding of the
basics and wants to delve beyond that into the further complexities of science
that will take us into the next century."
Another Source For OCD Information:
The OC Foundation, Inc, PO Box 70, Milford CT 06460
Panic Disorder
The Anxiety Disease. David Sheehan M.D. Bantam 1986.
---This is a fantastic book on panic disorder, and nobody with the disorder
should go without having read this one. It takes a very scientific approach to
the disorder and explains in layperson terms the scientific facts regarding the
cause and treatment of this affliction.
Panic Disorder The Medical Point of View. William Kernodle MD, Cadmus Publishing, order from: Mailing Services, attn. WDK,
1524 Brook Rd, Richmond VA 23220 $18.95 includes shipping.
--- "This up to date book explains the disorder from the medical perspective. It
is a great book. I think it gives a very complete and modern perspective to
those wanting solutions for this problem."
Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia: A Guide. --Obsessive-Compulsive Information Center, Madison Institute of Medicine, 7617
Mineral Point Rd., Suite 300, Madison, WI 53717. (608) 827-2470.
Triumph Over Fear Jerilyn Ross, Bantam Books, New York 1994. -
-- "There are numerous books on psychological aspects of panic disorder. This is
the best. Ms Ross, a charming layperson who founded the old National Phobia
Society, and later became herself a professional counselor, writes a book
explaining her tips on treatment drawing from her personal experiences in
recovery."
Social Phobia
Reading List for Lay Persons
The Hidden Face of Shyness Understanding & Overcoming Social Anxiety. Franklin Schneier M.D. and Lawrence Welkowitz, Ph.D., Avon Books, The Hearst
Corporation, New York, 1996.
--- "This is the best book on the subject for the person who suffers from social
anxiety, blushing, shyness, stage fright or public speaking phobia. It is also
a Godsend for parents whose children struggle with social anxiety. Well
written, clear and up to date. I give it a TEN."
Professional Reading List
Social Phobia Franklin Schneier M.D., Psychiatric Annals, 21: 6/June 1991, pages 349-353.
--- "For the professional. This is the best reference I have found on social
phobia treatment. It is a scientifically accurate review of the topic in a
concise, well written paper."
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Type A Behavior And Your Heart. Meyer Friedman M.D. Fawcett, 1974.
Treating Type A Behavior and your Heart. Meyer Friedman M.D. Fawcett, 1984.
--- "These two books are quite helpful. These are not specifically about
generalized anxiety disorder, but I have recommended them to numerous patients
through the years who have generalized anxiety disorder and they seem to have
really helped. Patients are particularly benefited by a rather long list of
concrete suggestions one could make in daily life that could help. One
suggestion was to part ways with your watch if you are too time pressured. I
treated a highly placed executive with generalized anxiety disorder who
actually give up his watch. He subsequently improved. It must not have bothered
his career to live without a watch as he was subsequently promoted to head
European operations for a major Fortune 500 corporation! The reader might also
pick up a copy of The Anxiety Disease by David Sheehan M.D., or Panic Disorder
by W. Kernodle (see above) and read about medications called benzodiazepines:
alprazolam, diazepam. You might also ask your physician for information about a
medicine called Buspar which may be helpful for this disorder in some persons."
Simple Phobias
Anxiety And Its Treatment., J. Greist M.D. (see above).
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
--- "The person who we want to see write a book on this hasn't done so as yet. Dr. Rachel Yehuda has made one important scientific discovery after another
in this field. Her medical journal articles are too intense for the layperson
to understand so you'll just have to wait on her to be inspired to write a book
for laypersons."
Anxiety And Its Treatment. J. Greist M.D. (see above).
